Advanced Modem Diagnostics

There are hundreds of different modems made by different manufacturers, each modem appears to have its own unique quirks that may create problems with Active Call Center.

If modem problems and erratic behavior are plaguing the software, it may be necessary to do advanced modem diagnostics. Be warned: these diagnostics are not for novice users - they are designed for advanced users that have some familiarity with modem commands.

Perform modem diagnostics as follows:

Go to http://www.sysinternals.com and proceed to the Utilities for your particular operating system. Find and download a utility called PortMon.

Extract the PortMon files in a separate directory.

Start Active Call Center and open the problem Call Tree.

Start PortMon.

Start the Active Call Center Call Monitor by clicking Phone Calls... Monitor Phone Lines from the menu bar.

PortMon should display all sorts of activity going back and forth between Active Call Center and the modem.

Dial into the Call Tree if necessary and duplicate the problem while PortMon monitors the modem.

After duplicating the problem, review the PortMon event log carefully to find where the problem may have been and examine commands sent to the modem and the modem's corresponding responses. "WriteComm" lines indicate commands sent to the modem, "ReadComm" lines indicates information received back from the modem.

The exact interpretation of the results of the log are up to you, it is far beyond the scope of this document to discuss every possible scenario that may arise.
