Checking for Device or Resource Conflicts

The performance of voice modems and other telephony devices is very sensitive to the hardware configuration. If there are any device conflicts or improperly assigned port addresses for your modem or telephony card, you may experience erratic and inconsistent behavior despite a successful modem test.

Do not attempt to correct device or resource conflicts if you are a novice computer user - you may inadvertently alter your system configuration! We urge you to contact your service professional to help you if you have any doubts about your ability to manage your system configuration.

If you have confidence that you can manage your system configuration yourself, you may follow these steps to uncover device and resource conflicts:

From the Windows taskbar, click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.

Double click the System icon in the Windows Control Panel.

Click the Device Manager tab.

Expand the list of devices fully: look for devices that have exclamation points, red crosses, question marks, or other icons that indicate a less than perfect installation. Make a note of any such devices.

Click the Properties button.

On the View Resources tab, look through all the devices again making note of those that have icons indicating some sort of problem.

Still on the View Resources tab, cycle through all devices by IRQ, I/O, DMA, and Memory by clicking the option buttons. Again, make note of all devices that have possible errors.

Fixing the Errors

Fixing configuration errors is not an easy task. Often it involves removing and/or reinstalling one or more devices. Sometimes devices have to be configured manually. In any case, we do not provide any instructions here because there is a real possibility of somehow ruining your system configuration while attempting to implement a fix. We suggest that if you are not confident about trying to fix device conflicts yourself, you should contact your system professional for assistance.
